George Eliot

George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans (1819–1880), one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She adopted a male pseudonym to ensure her work was taken seriously. Middlemarch, published in installments in 1871–72, is widely considered her masterpiece and one of the greatest novels in the English language.
