Octavia Butler

Octavia E. Butler (1947–2006) was an American science fiction author and the first sci-fi writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship. Her work, including the Patternist series and the Parable novels, explored race, gender, and power with unflinching clarity. She remains one of the most influential voices in speculative fiction.
